Switchel

There are plenty of fermented drinks to try your hand at making, here’s one that you can make in minutes & tastes delicious!

A Switchel is a drink made with raw apple cider vinegar (ACV). The type that says on the bottle that it contains the ‘mother’ or says it is ‘raw’ or ‘lIve’. This means that the ACV hasn’t been pasteurised & the live bacteria are still present.

It’s a really refreshing drink that can be made fast & unlike other fermented drinks, can be drunk straight away or left for a few hours for it’s flavours to develop.

I like encouraging the use of ACV because it’s a helpful digestive aid, stimulating digestive enzymes. Plus raw ACV still contains beneficial bacteria cultures, which may help with gut balance. This is important in perimenopause and menopause  when the gut can become out of balance.
Naturally these health claims are dependant on how much you drink, although more is not necessarily better & may make you feel a bit sick!

Makes 2 

Ingredients


500 mls water (can be fizzy, with no additives, sugar or flavourings).
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar.
1 - 2 teaspoons raw honey, how much you use is up to you & your taste, honey’s tend to differ in flavour & sweetness.
Zest & juice from 1 lime or ½ lemon.
1 heaped teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger or ¼ teaspoon ginger powder.  Optional - crushed fresh herbs eg lemon balm or mint or basil or lemon myrtle.
Handful ice 

Method



I like mine quite zingy & tangy, this might be too much for you, play around with the flavour combinations.

Mix everything together in a jug & pour into 2 glasses, over ice if you wish.

This also keeps well in the fridge to use the following day.
