All about you

The first part of any session with Emma is all about finding out about you. Emma is committed to helping you achieve a sense of vitality, and this means digging deep into your personal food and nutrition story. There is space for you to express any issues you might have and how it affects you, so Emma can identify the best approach for you.

Preparing for your consult

Some clients choose to bring along to the consult relevant information such as blood test results or a week-long food and mood diary. A food and mood diary especially can help you and Emma identify any patterns associated with symptoms and habits. Whilst this is helpful it is not necessary - there’s only one requirement to bring to Emma’s consults, yourself!

A personalised plan

Together you and Emma will work out a personalised plan to bring about the change that you seek. This is always achievable and comes with plenty of food and recipe inspiration, designed by Emma. This plan might involve food and meal suggestions and long-term lifestyle shifts to help you with symptom relief, or a short-term programme to identify foods that may be aggravating your symptoms.

Ongoing support

Your nutrition journey with Emma does not end with your first consultation. A one-to-one consultation means you will be able to email Emma with any questions and queries along the way. She also recommends that you see her for a follow-up Review consultation(s). How often you see Emma depends on your personal needs. On average, clients see Emma 3-4 times initially, followed by bi-annual consultations in order to integrate the latest research into their changing lifestyle and goals.

Frequently asked questions

-> Do you offer online consultations?
Yes, currently all consults are held virtually.
-> I think I eat well and do plenty of exercise, but can’t seem to lose weight. Why is this?
There are many reasons why a person can’t lose weight (assuming they need to) - some factors influencing weight loss are gut health and it’s microbiome, hormone balance, eating the right type of foods to suit you and at the right times in the day. These and many other factors are discussed in the 1:1 consultation with Emma.
-> I’ve tried lots of diets but none of them seem to work long term. Can you help me?
It’s important to find out the type of foods that suit you - which are more likely to mean you gain fat and which are more likely to keep you lean. Working out times you eat and the environment you eat in is also important, plus many other factors such as sleep quality. These are all discussed in your 1:1 consultation with Emma.
-> I seem to get a bloated stomach most evenings. Why is that?
The simple answer is that you are probably eating foods that you can’t tolerate at the moment (not necessarily for the rest of your life!) However, there are many other factors that influence bloating in the abdomen, such as gut microbes. These are all discussed with you in the clinic with Emma, so you and she can work out a strategy to help.
-> I have a rash on different parts of my skin. Could food be causing this?
There are many things that can cause skin rashes and itchy skin. What you are eating and drinking, as well as hormone balance, all play a part. Plus your environment and what you are directly putting on your skin and your clothes impacts skin’s microbial balance. During the consultation with Emma, we discuss all these factors, and other contributing ones, and come up with a strategy to help.
-> I’ve always had frequent bowel movements, but recently it has become worse, so now I don’t want to go out. Can you help me?
Frequent loose bowel movements can be so debilitating. It’s important to try and understand what's triggering them. Food and drink are the obvious choices to look at, but this can sometimes be complicated so it’s really helpful to have someone like Emma to easily explain what might help. During the consultation you will learn what can be done, easy strategies to make some changes, and hopefully bring symptom relief.
-> I get headaches when I eat particular foods. Is this an allergy? Is there something I can do to prevent this and still eat my favourite foods?
Some people get headaches from foods they are allergic to, whilst others may not be allergic to particular food and drinks but still find they get headaches. This may be helped by avoiding those foods, however it may be that these symptoms of headaches are new and yet you may have been eating these triggering foods all your life. So together we examine what is going on in your metabolism, your hormone balance, and gut health to try and work out what the cause might be. This might mean that once the healing is completed you could go back to eating those foods sometimes and feel ok.
-> I eat the same way as I always have, but I’ve put on weight during perimenopause. Why is that?
Your hormones affect many different parts of your body beyond your reproductive organs. For example there are oestrogen receptors in your gut, liver and brain. This means a change in hormones around perimenopause can cause metabolic changes and may lead to weight gain. During a consultation with Emma, we discuss the things that you can do to change this and eat well during this time of fluctuations.
-> I am always constipated! But recently with the change in my hormones due to Perimenopause this has become worse. Nothing seems to help. Can you help me?
Constipation can be exacerbated during Perimenopause. Since part of the function of our gut is to detoxify unwanted matter from our bodies, then being constipated may lead to feeling tired, irritable and with a bloated abdomen. It is important to find out what to eat and drink to encourage consistent bowel movements so you can feel your best. During a consultation with Emma, you work out what is most effective for you, as it is different for everyone.
